Coonabarabran (Sliding Springs Observatory)

There is so much more to Coonabarabran than Sliding Springs but sadly, we only had a day there. Furthermore, the other activities that would have been loads of fun involved walking in the Warrumbungle ranges. Having twisted my left ankle a couple of days ago and Anthony having just completed his second knee surgery 5 weeks ago - walking in the mountains wasn't an option open to us. Nevertheless, we managed to spend 3 hours at night looking at the stars and planets through huge telescopes of our host Peter Starr... very aptly named don't you think?

Do check out his website for those who are interested in astronomy : http://www.tenbyobservatory.com/

The following day was spent at Crystal Kingdom and at Sliding Springs. Crystal Kingdom is home to a little museum of crystals that are found in the Warrumbungle range and a gift shop where everything there was made out of crystals gathered from the Warrumbungle mountains.

Sliding Springs is more than a home to a huge telescope, it has a musuem (a very child friendly one) that displayed some of the pictures taken from the telescope. It was amazing and awe inspring looking at photos taken by this huge telescope. Therefore, through the help of a tiny magnifying glass I was able to look at photos of space dotted by so many planets beyond our solar system and to identify other solar systems.
