Wellington Caves is between Dubbo and Cowra (our next port of call for the night). Wellington Caves consists of three series of caves that are accessible to visitors. The famous Cathedral caves, The phosphate mines and the Gaden caves.
We were only able to visit the Phosphate mines and the Cathedral Caves as we missed the final excursion into the Gaden caves for the day. There is also a Caravan Park in the grounds for those who would like to stay a night and visit all three caves. Every year just before Christmas, there will be a Carol service in the main cavern if the Cathedral caves. It is said to be able to accommodate as many as 300 people. I can imagine how beautiful, magical and mythical the music will be when sung in the cavern. The photo in this blog is the main cavern in the Cathedral caves and the stalagmite and stalactite formations of millions of years make it look like an altar and pulpit one would find in a church.
The phosphate mines consists of archeological evidences of animals that exist at least 300,000 years ago. Paleontologists from all over the world have been visiting these caves for animal fossils since the 1930s. There is also evidence of the existence of a giant serpent as depicted in aborrigines folklore and their their art.
